If your idea of summer bliss is spending a sunny afternoon gliding across calm waters surrounded by birdsong, you’re in luck! Green Bay is an excellent place to get out on the water, especially if you’re new to kayaking, canoeing, or paddleboarding. With gentle currents, scenic picnic stops, and convenient rental stations scattered throughout the area, it's easy to spend a few relaxing hours exploring by kayak, canoe, or paddleboard.
Fox River
The Fox River offers some of the area’s most versatile paddling. Want a downtown adventure? Paddle right up to the CityDeck, grab lunch and a cold beer at Hagemeister Park, and stroll the boardwalk.
Kayaker’s Point is another popular launch, with easy access across the river toward the National Railroad Museum or Ashwaubomay Park. It also features a self-serve kayak rental station, so no need to bring your own equipment.
For a quieter outing, launch from Wrightstown Park and head upstream toward Plum Creek. The gently moving water makes this a great option for beginners and families, with a lovely stop at Mueller Park where you can stretch your legs and enjoy a picnic before paddling back.
Other launch options along the Fox include Bomier Boat Launch, Fox Point Boat Launch, Perkofski Boat Launch, and Porlier Pier. With so much variety, you can curate your perfect Fox River paddle.

East River
If you want a peaceful paddle without venturing too far outside of the city, the East River is calling your name. Wooded shorelines, no motorboats, and an almost nonexistent current make this one of the area’s most beginner-friendly rivers. Launch from Green Isle Park, East Lawn Park, or the Olde Main East River Launch and enjoy a relaxing float through this placid pocket of the city.
Lily Lake
Brown County’s only inland lake is a hidden gem for paddlers. Surrounded by towering pines and cedars, this 42-acre lake feels magically tucked away from modern life, despite being only a 15-minute drive from the city. Anglers can also test their luck from the water or the fishing piers and try to catch a largemouth bass, northern pike, or bluegill.
Duck Creek Quarry Park
Duck Creek Quarry Park is one of the most unique spots to paddle in the area. With its contained water and non-motorized boating policy, it’s perfect for paddling and is also a popular catch-and-release fishing spot. Plus, when you’re ready to wrap up the paddling, you and the crew can head to the beach where you’ll find a buoyed shallow family swim area as well as a deep swimming area for more advanced swimmers.

Duck Creek
On Green Bay’s west side, Duck Creek winds serenely through Howard before reaching Pamperin Park. Paddle your way downstream, stop for a picnic, and let the kids explore the large, inclusive playground. Launch from Deerfield Docks in Howard.
Suamico River
If you want a hearty dose of wildlife while you paddle, head north to the Suamico River. This is another calm stretch of river with a mild current, making it great for families and beginners. The round trip to the mouth of the bay takes about two hours, and along the way you might spot waterfowl, songbirds, deer, muskrats, beavers, or even otters if you’re lucky!
Ahnapee River
If you’re looking to make a day of it, the Ahnapee River is well worth the drive! Launch from Dam County Park in Forestville and paddle the flatwater river as it meanders through marshes filled with cattails, reeds, and an abundance of birds before arriving in charming downtown Algoma on the shores of Lake Michigan. Once you’ve reached Algoma, it’s time to explore! Enjoy a stroll along the boardwalk at Crescent Beach, get a tasty bite at one of the city’s many restaurants, and discover art galleries, murals, boutiques, and more.
Where to Get Paddling Equipment
Don’t have your own sea-worthy (or river-worthy) vessel? There are plenty of places to rent canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards from local outfitters, including Scott's Sports, Zeller's Ski & Sports, Fox River Kayaking Company, Kayak Wisconsin, Suamico Paddle, and Hang Loose Rentals. You'll also find convenient self-serve rental kiosks at several boat launches throughout the area, making it easier than ever to get out on the water.
