The Phoenix Men take on Oakland in a Horizon League contest.
The Horizon League announced the complete 2016-17 league schedule, which includes 18 league games for the Green Bay men’s basketball team. The program also released its 13-game nonconference schedule, which is highlighted by home games against Belmont and Central Michigan.
The Phoenix will host Indiana Tech on Nov. 1 for its lone exhibition game of the season, before officially opening the season on Saturday, Nov. 12, against Northland College. The team will raise its NCAA Tournament and Horizon League Tournament championship banner on Saturday, Nov. 26, when it plays host to Central Michigan. The game will also feature a replica banner giveaway, sponsored by Pepsi.
The road nonconference slate for Green Bay will be as challenging as always, with visits to Big 12-foe Kansas State (Nov. 30) and in-state rival Wisconsin (Dec. 14). The Phoenix will also play in the Bill Frack Tournament, hosted by Bowling Green on Nov. 19-21, where it will face Murray State, Bowling Green and UMKC.
“Our nonconference schedule will certainly prepare us for the challenges of the Horizon League. We are faced with a stretch of eight out of nine games away from home, which will test our endurance. We also face two of the better teams in the OVC in Murray State and Belmont, along with the challenge of visiting power schools Kansas State and Wisconsin, so it certainly won’t be easy,” head coach Linc Darner said.
In-state rival Milwaukee will serve as Green Bay’s Horizon League-slate opening opponent on Friday, Jan. 6. The defending tournament champion Phoenix will play five Horizon League home games in the month of January.
The league-portion of Green Bay’s schedule comes with a difficult stretch to end the season, when the Phoenix will play six out of eight games on the road. The team does however get to wrap up the season at home, hosting Oakland and Detroit for Senior Day on Feb. 26.
