First Ship Contest
CAN YOU GUESS WHEN THE FIRST SHIP WILL ENTER THE PORT OF GREEN BAY'S SHIPPING CHANNEL IN 2023? IT COULD BE SCIENCE THAT GUIDES YOU, OR MAYBE A LITTLE BIT OF LUCK.
Again this year, the Port of Green Bay and Discover Green Bay are partnering in a contest that embraces the age-old tradition of guessing the day the first ship will arrive at the port.
Tradition also holds, that due to weather and other shipping factors, no one knows when arrival will occur. The person who guesses the closest date and time of the first ship's arrival will win a prize package offered by the Port of Green Bay which includes a one-night stay at St. Brendan’s Inn, a gift card for The Depot Green Bay, four admission tickets to the Neville Public Museum of Green Bay, a Port of Green Bay swag bag, a 200-year Anniversary Brown County Monopoly game, and a 2023 The Big Ships of Green Bay Calendar by Chuck Zentmeyer.
The shipping industry is significant for the Port of Green Bay and the Greater Green Bay region. 1,750,000 metric tons were moved in and out of the Port during the 2022 shipping season. The Port has 14 terminal operators along the Fox River and businesses handle dry bulk commodities such as coal, limestone and salt, bulk liquids like petroleum products, liquid asphalt and tallow, and breakbulk commodities including wood pulp and forest products in addition to oversized cargo like machinery and wind components. As the westernmost Lake Michigan dock, railroad companies and major trucking firms utilize the Port of Green Bay. Visit www.portofgreenbay.com for more port information.
