We are surrounded by endless parks and trails to embark on a snowy adventure. From snowshoeing, to cross-country skiing and even trying a fat bike on the snow for the first time, there are plenty of places to explore this winter and spend some time outdoors.

Hit the Winter Trails at Brown County Parks

L.H. Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve, Brown County Reforestation Camp and Neshota Park have miles of trails to explore in the wintertime by foot, snowshoe, ski or bike. You’ll feel like you took a step off the beaten path on these wooded trails that surround you by nature.

Snowshoe Trails

Brown County Parks has approximately 9 miles of marked snowshoeing trails which include 4 miles at Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve, 2 miles at Neshota Park and 3 miles at the Reforestation Camp.

You can snowshoe in any of the County parks at no cost. You are encouraged to explore off-trail areas of the park on snowshoes. Keep in mind that there is NO walking or snowshoeing allowed on cross country or snowmobile trails. A citation may be issued for walking on cross-country or snowmobile trails.

Barkhausen has a limited number of snowshoes for rental on a first-come, first-served basis. Hours of rental are Saturday and Sunday 12:00-4:00 p.m. For rental availability please call (920) 434-2824.

Watch Barkhausen's Facebook page for self-guided candlelight hiking events offered on select Thursdays and Friday evenings from 5 to 8 pm this winter. Cost is (2 and under free), $5/person. Snowshoe rentals are $3/child or $5/adult. Pre-registration required.

Cross-Country Ski Trails

Brown County Parks has approximately 34 miles of marked and groomed cross-country trails within Brown County which include 9 miles at Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve, 6 miles at Neshota Park and 19 miles at the Reforestation Camp.

Trail passes are required for all persons 12 years or older. Daily Passes and Annual Passes can be purchased online from Brown County Parks and also at the trailhead (all fees support ski trail maintenance).

Snow Bike Trails

Have you tried fat biking? These specially-adapted mountain bikes, with large tires capable of cycling on snow, rugged terrain and sand have become a normal part of winter recreation in the upper Midwest.

Brown County Parks has approximately 6 miles of marked and groomed fat tire bike trails located at the Reforestation Camp. Trails are located at the Reforestation Camp in the lower parking lot near the Pines Shelter. Trail passes are required for all persons 16 years or older. Daily Passes and Annual Passes can be purchased online and also at the trailhead. Fat Bikes are available to rent at the Adventure Park Base Camp, located on the north end of the Upper lot at the Reforestation Camp. 

Winter Trails at Baird Creek

Not only is Baird Creek a popular destination for sledding and snowboarding, but it is also home to a variety of snow-covered trails for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snow biking.

Snowshoe & Ski Trails at Brown County Wildlife Sanctuary

Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary is a beautiful 600-acre urban wildlife refuge with trails open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you are looking for a guided adventure, join naturalists Kim and Jody on Tuesdays at 10:30 am for a snowshoe hike in January, February, and March. If snow conditions are not great, Kim and Jody will lead a beautiful winter hike! All hikes last approximately 45-60 minutes and the cost is $5 per person (cash only please). Please call 920-391-3671 to reserve your spot! Explore the Wide-Open Space at a Local Vineyard

LedgeStone Vineyards in Greenleaf transforms its 10-acre property and 75 acres of open farm into a snowshoe and cross-country ski trail during the winter. Choose between an easy 15- to 45-minute route, or take a one- to two-hour hike through fields that lead to the Niagara Escarpment. Afterwards, sip mulled wine by outdoor fire pits and patio heaters on the property. Some snowshoe rentals are available, but visitors are encouraged to bring their own gear.
