If you’re planning a visit to Wisconsin’s oldest city, take note of the best ways to pack, plan and party in Green Bay.

Pack for the weather

Packing the proper attire for Green Bay weather can be a bit tricky. Spring has officially sprung in Green Bay, but temperatures are known to fluctuate throughout the year. The greatest 24-hour temperature change on record in Green Bay dates back to November 11-12 in 1911, with a whopping 60-degree shift of 60F to 6F. That being said, these seasonal averages in Green Bay should help you pack appropriately:

  • Spring (March-May): 53.1 degrees
  • Summer (June-August): 77.7 degrees
  • Fall (September-November): 56.3 degrees
  • Winter (December-February) 27.1 degrees

Weather in Green Bay is generally mild, so as long as you pack a light jacket (make that a heavy jacket December-February), you’ll enjoy this temperate climate for outdoor activities at places like Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary, Bay Beach Amusement Park, NEW Zoo and Adventure Park, Wequiock Falls, Lake Michigan, Ashwaubomay Park, etc.

Fly GRB

Nothing quite says “you’ve arrived in Green Bay” than flying into Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport (GRB), officially known as “The Gateway to Lambeau Field.” GRB is located just over four miles from the Green Bay Packers home stadium Lambeau Field as well as many hotels, restaurants and activities.

Take advantage of GRB’s nursing mother rooms, affordable parking, free wi-fi and charging stations, pre-security restaurant and two post-security snack shops, and don’t forget the gift shop stocked with classic Wisconsin gifts and cheese. On your departure, the airport recommends arriving an hour and 15 minutes before your flight, which is far less time than the two or three hours that larger airports recommend.

Plan for public transportation

If you’re flying into Green Bay, you’ll immediately find many options for ground transportation, including car rentals, ride sharing programs, taxicab and limousine services, and hotel shuttles. A bus pass is another great way to get around the city. A one-day pass on the Green Bay Metro will set you back just $3. Even better, all fixed route service is free on Saturdays, to destinations like the Bay Beach Amusement Park, Resch Center, Bay Park Square Mall and Lambeau Field. Just note that the Metro does not operate on Sundays, unless there’s a Packers home game. (And on game day the rides are free from select locations going directly to the stadium.) You can find the full schedule of routes on their website.

Grab a bite at true Green Bay restaurants

Don’t leave the city without chowing down at these truly unique and delicious Green Bay restaurants:

  • Kroll’s West is the perfect spot to grab a burger. The Original Kroll’s Hamburger was first served in 1936, featuring a 1/4 lb. classic buttered burger on a crispy toasted bun. You can load it up with everything from hickory smoked bacon to sauerkraut to mushrooms.

  • Zesty’s Frozen Custard is known for their frozen custard that’s whipped fresh inhouse every few hours to ensure a rich smooth texture that you’ll be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. Whether it’s the Ooey Gooey Cookie Dough scramble or the Peanut Dream sundae that you can’t resist, you’ll quickly find out what Real Wisconsin Frozen Custard is all about.

  • Mackinaws Grill & Spirits is a Green Bay staple with something for everyone, featuring a menu of fajitas, steaks, burgers, pasta dishes, seafood and sandwiches. The best part of its warm and rustic UP North atmosphere is the Cabin Bar – an actual log-cabin enclosed by the dining area.

  • Titletown Brewing Company offers more than just their own fresh brewed beer. You’ll also find legendary lunch and dinner specials, brewery tours, The Roof Tap and a whole lot more. It’s no wonder they were voted 2017’s Best Brewpub in America by USA Today.

Check out Green Bay’s worst-kept secret:

Everyone knows you can’t go to Green Bay without checking out Lambeau Field, the home of the Green Bay Packers. The Lambeau Field Atrium is home to the Packers Pro Shop (the team store owned and operated by the Packers), the Packers Hall of Fame (exciting and historical galleries), Lambeau Field Stadium Tours (walk down the same tunnel the Packers players do on gameday), and 1919 Kitchen & Tap (enjoy fresh and seasonal favorites and can’t miss cheese curds). Plus, right across the street from Lambeau, there’s Titletown, a new community development full of fun activities. Titletown’s park is open to everyone with year-round activities, an ice-skating rink and tubing lanes down Ariens Hill in the winter, a full-size football field, a unique playground and plenty of outdoor games and fitness activities – all in the heart of the action. In summer, check out the bar at the top of the sledding hill!  Staying at Lodge Kohler and dining at Hinterland are also great options since these are part of the new development as well.

A trip to Green Bay is sure to be a trip filled with fun, food and unforgettable memories. Land in the middle of all the action by flying GRB and explore a city that is like no other. Green Bay may be famous for football, but it’s all the hidden treasures that make Greater Green Bay a special place to visit. See you soon!
