ALGOMA, WISCONSIN
Set against the beautiful backdrop of majestic Lake Michigan, Algoma's sandy beach invites visitors to slow down and enjoy a relaxed small town atmosphere. Founded in 1851, the city of Algoma, WI has retained its traditional port town charm. Algoma's steel tower lighthouse is popular for photographers looking for that perfect Great Lakes lighthouse shot. Algoma is just 35 minutes east of Green Bay.
The historic downtown is very walkable. Visitors can enjoy a variety of quaint gift shops and eateries. Brightly painted wall murals re-create historic advertisements on vintage brick buildings. Along the way, stop in at the von Stiehl winery, Wisconsin's oldest licensed winery for a tour, and taste award-winning grape and fruit wines. If you're visiting in Fall, plan your trip around the popular Wet Whistle Wine Festival for wine tasting, a grape stomp, music and a chance to experience local culinary favorites.
The once-abandoned railway line, now known as the picturesque Ahnapee Trail offers hiking, biking, horseback riding and snowmobiling. The winding journey follows the Ahnapee River, crosses an old-fashioned railway bridge and passes by scenic landscapes of farmland, marshes and beautiful woods.
A visit to Algoma, Wisconsin would not be complete without fishing in Lake Michigan. Charter captains are experts in cruising one of the top sport fishing ports in the Midwest. Charters can be tailored for the novice or the experienced fisherman. Pier fishing and launches are available for private boats. Brown trout, coho salmon and powerful steelhead are some of the locals' favorite catches. Every August, Algoma celebrates its fishing village heritage with its Shanty Days festival.
