Great Lakes Wine Competition Awards
von Stiehl Lakeshore Fume a Gold Medal

Algoma, Wis.
August 3, 2006

Algoma, WI –The Great Lake of Michigan may separate Algoma from most entries in the Great Lakes Wine Competition, but von Stiehl’s Lakeshore Fume bridged the gap with the high recognition of a Gold Medal. Lakeshore Fume is described as:

"A crisp and fruity semi-dry white made from Seyval grapes: rich in flavors of tropical fruit and citrus with a slight touch of oak to add complexity."
The judging of over 450 entries was held by the Culinary Studies Institute of Oakland Community College on May 11, 2006. The purpose of the event was to enhance the wine consumers’ awareness of the wineries and their great wines coming from the unique viticulture of this wine region (the Great Lakes).
Von Stiehl also received two silver medals on its Cherry Kirsche and Harvest Apple. Bronze medals were awarded to the Crimson Royale (Concord), Satin Red (light fruity blend of French hybrid grapes), and Sweet Cherry (from the Door County Montmorency Cherry).

Wisconsin’s oldest winery also received six medals from the “Tasters Guild International Wine Judging Competition”. Four silver medals were awarded to the following wines: Late Harvest Gewurztraminer, Late Harvest Riesling, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Von Stiehl’s Riesling and Pinot Gris both received bronze medals.

Though originally known for cherry wine in the 1960’s and 1970’s, this internationally accredited winery now actually produces more gourmet grape wines. Specializing in the Stiehl German heritage, the Riesling and Oktoberfest (blend) are the two most popular.

Von Stiehl Winery is located at 115 Navarino Street in Algoma and is open seven days a week for tours and tasting from 9am to 5pm. For more information, they can be visited on the web at www.vonstiehl.com, or call 800-955-5208.
